Shason Packaging : Logo design process March 7, 2010

We were recently approached by an Australian based packaging provider Shason Packaging to get variety of communication solutions including the brand identity, business card, website and brochure designs. We started with the Logo, which was greatly appreciated by the client and we thought that it would be nice to post an article that explains the typical logo design process that we follow.

Creative Brief

Shason Packaging is a new venture of its parent business Shason Industries. Shason Packaging (SP) has emerged as a catalyst in the environment friendly packaging industry. In this venture, it has envisioned three fundamental elements as a key to its success. One of them will be the focus of individual customer needs. The others will be sustainable sourcing of goods and services and very effective supply chain management. Therefore, the goal of SP is to provide eco-friendly solutions to its customer’s packaging needs in a timely fashion by the means of professionalism.

Client wanted to have a logo which was simple, smart, clever, talks about eco-friendly and strongly incorporate the ‘SP’ in the logo.

1. Brainstorming

We started with pencil and paper and developed various thumbnail sketches focusing on ‘SP’. At one point we told to our self that lets make it simple and focus on client’s main bread and butter the Paper. So as a packaging provider his job is to mold, fold and press the paper and make a product for his customer. Why not his logo could be same way? The result was a small thumbnail of what we were thinking and later a real 3D model of the design.

They say that don’t fall in love with you idea however, we started to feel the affection in our heart for this concept because it was clever, simple, strong and talking about the nature of client’s business. As a general rule a designer should work on two-three concepts but we thought that we would present just one logo.

2. The Execution

Start > All Programs > Adobe Illustrator CS4 > New

Execution in Illustrator

It didn’t take much time to digitalize the logo just had to make sure all the points matched well. On the color part, green was the first choice to bring the eco-friendly nature of industry.

3. Presentation and Feedbak

Client just loved the concept and logo though Client wanted to use the font of parent company to communicate that it’s a part of the same house. We got a scanned version of letterhead of Shason Industries. The font was custom designed so we traced it as they didn’t have the vector version of logo.
